After a long hiatus due to COVID, we welcomed visitors to the museum! We followed Covid protocol with our guests. In spite of the need for masks and temperature checks, everyone had a great time. Members of the Porsche club and the Ferrari club were in attendance.
Classic & Sports Car did a nice feature last year on our Mazda R360. Check it out here.
The Malamut Museum recently hosted a private holiday party. The museum is available for private functions and charity events. Contact us to schedule your private event!
We had a big party at the museum for Mike’s birthday. Guests were treated to a delicious lunch and entertainment. Mike picked up a guitar and jammed with the band.
We recently took the Porsche 904 out to the Thermal Club in the Coachella Valley for some track time. The car is fantastic on the track. We diced it up with a Porsche 906 for several laps.
If you happen to see Ford vs. Ferrari, look for our 904 in the film. 3 other museum cars are also seen in the film.
Thanks to Pete Rinaldi for the photos.
This past Saturday we brought out 3 cars to the SoCal Vintage BMW Meet at Woodley Park. Cool fall weather returned for the show. It was a nice break from all the wind and fires of the past week. We actually had a few sprinkles. The show was well-attended. We took home Driver’s Choice wins for Best Early Model and Best of Meet for our ’56 502 cabriolet.
We took some laps around Fuji Raceway in race-prepped Toyota FRSs. Great cars!
Interview for Japanese TV about Americans on the Nippon Rally: The Nippon Rally is one of our favorites.
Greetings from Japan! We took in several car events on this trip, among them a great air-cooled VW show and driving race cars around Fuji Raceway.
Yesterday we welcomed several clubs to the museum for a visit. Those in attendance were the Alfa Club, Porsche Club, Corvette Club, and the Woodies Club, among others. Out back, we put together a camping display with some of the trailers and campers that we have in the collection. Our general store trailer made its first appearance as being part of our collection. More on that in another post. We finished off the event in the early afternoon with pizza and chocolate chip cookies. For more photos from the event, check out https://flic.kr/s/aHsmHwvdpW
We sent out the AMC wagon to be used in the shooting of a pilot episode for an HBO series on the LA Lakers. Learn more about the series here: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/…/meet-stars-hbos-la-lake…

Today the Helms truck is out on a shoot for the series Penny Dreadful.
There are so many events that take place during Car Week in Monterey, some of them not so well-known. We took our latest Datsun Z purchase on the Garage Style Magazine Rally.
We brought several cars to the Japanese Invitational at Pebble Beach this year. Not shown in the photos but were there – ’91 Acura NSX and the brown ’72 Suzuki.
One of the events we took part in during Monterey car Week was the Bringatrailer Alumni Gathering at Laguna Seca. We have purchased and sold several cars through BAT over the past few years. We brought our ’54 Jaguar XK120 to be on display for preview while it runs on auction through their site. The auction closes today at 2:15 PST. Place your bids! https://bringatrailer.com/li…/1954-jaguar-xk120-roadster-15/
Yesterday we welcomed a group of historic Bentleys to the museum. Several of them are here from distant countries. They are on a tour of the western US. The group is making their way to Monterey for car week in celebration of 100 Years of Bentley.
The first batch of cars we have heading to Monterey for Car Week is ready to go!
Today we welcomed a group from Belgium on the tail end of their tour of the western US.
Last Sunday we brought out the Euro spec ’74 Porsche RS to the San Marino Concours. Usually we bring vintage Japanese cars to the show but there was no Japanese class this year. This year was a hot one with temps in the mid 90’s. Good turn out! Check out more photos from the event at https://flic.kr/s/aHsmEa8VV9
We got some snow this week on the Ramshorn Rally in Montana! This marque Porsche event is open to 1989 and older cars. Outlaws are welcome. Entries are limited thirty cars.
Hot VWs Magazine did a nice feature on the museum in their June 2019 issue.
Last weekend we took part in Luftgekült 6, an event for air-cooled Porsches. This year it was held on the Universal Pictures back lot. This event is really top-notch. We brought out the 1958 356 Speedster Super.
Last night we welcomed the folks from Car Night for a visit to the museum.
The 1942 Kübelwagen returned this week from the set of the show “Westworld”. It arrived with some “artistic” Hollywood mud splatters on it.
We had some folks from Motortrend drop by this afternoon. They were checking out our vintage Japanese cars and making selections for the vintage Japanese show that takes place in Monterey in August.
Spring cleaning! This past week we pulled the majority of the cars out of our “vault” to give the cars a little exercise. We did some rearranging as well. We’re getting some new projects lined up for this year.
We recently had a small group schedule a visit to the museum. They visited yesterday for cars and cookies
Hello from the Route 66 National Parks Tour! We brought the ’65 Mustang GT convertible out for the tour. First stop was Grand Canyon. In Bryce Canyon, there was still snow on the ground. The car completed the tour with no issues!
We recently loaned our 1956 Eshelman to Jay Leno for a segment on his TV show. Looks like Jay had fun with it!
The ’53 Dannenhauer & Stauss Cabriolet is just about ready for a trip across the country to Amelia Island.
Dannanhauer and Stauss was a German custom coach builder based out of Stuttgart, Germany. They created new bodies with a distinct Porsche flavor on a Volkswagen platform and mechanicals.
We recently received a copy of the Japanese magazine Daytona from our friends in Japan. The issue we received ran a feature on the museum. Pretty cool!
Last week we welcomed a group that was in town for the Roadster Nationals.
The vintage Japanese car exhibit at the Petersen Museum has recently been updated to include our Toyota 2000GT. Other cars from our collection on display include the Mazda Cosmo, Mazda R360, Suzuki Jimny, Subaru 360, and the Honda 360.
Last weekend we had the ’41 Chrysler Barrel Back Woody out for the 15th annual Malibu Christmas Woody Parade. The Woody Parade ended at Malibu Village, where Woodies filled the streets. Guests enjoyed live music by southern California party band, The Hodads. Holiday food and drinks were also served. Given the recent devastating fires in Malibu, the Woody Parade had special meaning this year as the community came together.
This week we received a delivery of some of the smallest cars in one of the biggest trucks. They’re kid cars! Aren’t they cool?! The craftsmanship on these miniatures is pretty amazing.
The 904 is battery powered. It even makes the right engine noises from a built-in mp3 player and speakers under the rear deck. It also has a working horn and lights. The race car is gas powered but we’re not sure what kid would be strong enough to handle the steering wheel!
We had a little excitement yesterday when the Hill Fire started up the street from the museum. It was very windy. The fire blew through but kept a safe distance from the museum.
We have a new logo! We brought our old friend Louis Lum out of retirement to put something together for us. Louis worked on logos for Bank of America, Singapore Airlines, and Alitalia, among others. Thanks Louie!
This week for four days (November 4-8), we’re participating in the 300 SL Classic. The event drives 1000 miles of the best backroads that northern Arizona has to offer: from Scottsdale to Winslow to Sedona to the Grand Canyon and back to Scottsdale. All Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Coupes “Gullwings” (1954-1957) and Roadsters (1957-1963) are eligible for the 300 SL Classic.
This week we are taking part in Rally Nippon with the Toyota 2000GT. Last year the rally ran in Japan. This year the organizers decided to bring the rally over to California for a tour to celebrate their 10th anniversary. This video is from the rally introduction and starting line. The event took us through Monterey and a run through Laguna Seca, among other places. Lots of great cars, roads, and people on this event. Check out the video of the Toyota 2000GT taking a lap around Laguna Seca!
The BMW Luxus 700 was out on a wedding photo shoot for the day yesterday. The groom is a huge BMW fan and wanted the classic in some of the wedding photos.
Another batch of cars is heading out for the weekend to another set for the Tarantino movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. The VW driver training car is supposed to be in a scene with one of the celebrities driving it.
We joined the fun with Gull Wing International Convention 2018 at their show in Pasadena on Saturday. We brought out the 1955 300sl. The metallic green color really comes alive out in the sunlight.
Today we welcomed members of Gull Wing Group International with their visit to the museum. The parking lots were full of 300sl Gull Wings! It was quite a site to see so many in one place. Be sure to check out the video! Gull Wing Group International is in town this week celebrating their 50th annual convention in Pasadena, CA. It was great having all these special cars and the great people who drove them drop by for a visit. Here’s a few additional photos from yesterday’s event.
Great fun at the Porsche tractor race yesterday at Rennfest VI. We took first in class! Thanks to Steve Van Den Hemel for the Le Mans start photo. There were two races: one Saturday and one on Sunday. It was definitely one of the highlights of the weekend. Look for the arrows pointing out Mike going down the track in this video! (footage by Matt Chambers) https://vimeo.com/292544865
Hello from Rennfest VI! We are up at Laguna Seca for the weekend celebrating all things Porsche. We had our ’51 Porsche on display. Mike will also be driving the Porsche tractor in the all-Porsche tractor race that is being held on both Saturday and Sunday.
We recently picked up a couple awards at the Japanese Classic Car Show which took place earlier this month. The show took place in Long Beach, CA. Our Honda N360 won “Best Honda – Old School”. The Toyota S800 took the award for “Best Restoration and Display”.
The Tarantino movie shoot continues with more cars! This time the Jaguar XK150 and the Morgan are on their way to the Playboy Mansion.
We sent several cars to the inaugural Japanese Invitational in Monterey, CA. It was a great show featuring some pretty unusual cars. It’s good to see vintage Japanese cars finally getting some recognition during Car Week at Monterey.
We took “Best in Class” at the Quail in Monterey this week with the ’51 Porsche. Check out this short clip of the car on the grass.
Our ’57 VW Deluxe Microbus made it’s show debut yesterday at the Concours on the Avenue in Carmel. We won the award for “Most Fun”. Not a bad debut for the bus!
Monterey Car Week is in full swing! Yesterday we were out at the Concours on the Avenue in Carmel. We took the Class Award & The Mayor’s Award with the ’51 Porsche.
We recently sent out a few more cars for another Tarantino movie shoot. Photos by collection manager Neil Torrey.
Our recent open house day was featured on Malibu Fireball Vlog. Check out the video here.
This has been the summer of movie cars for the museum! This current batch of cars is on its way to a film shoot for a new Matt Damon movie. The working title of the movie is “Ford vs. Ferrari”. The movie from 20th Century Fox will star Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby and Christian Bale as engineer and racing driver Ken Miles. According to Variety, the film focuses on Shelby and Miles’ effort to turn the GT40 into a Le Mans-winning machine. The movie is set for release on June 28, 2019.
Fun night on the set last night in downtown LA with the Malamut Museum cars for Quentin Tarantino’s film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. This scene was in Italy, 1969.
We saw Al Pacino, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie. The set crew jumped on people with cameras so no shots of them unfortunately. We sent several cars to various sets for the film. For more photos, please visit this link.
We had a BIG turnout last weekend at our open house last weekend! This year’s open house included several car clubs: Redline Corvette Club, Audi Club, Mercedes Club, AAC. Also in attendance were members/followers of Bringatrailer.com, Conejo Cars and Coffee, and many others. This has probably been one of our biggest events to date.
Along with the displays in the museum, pizza, and the band playing, there was also a really good showing of classics in the parking lots and streets surrounding the museum. Check out more photos from the event here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmprsRUi
We had a great time at the Father’s Day Car Show on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills this past weekend. We brought out the 1957 Fiat Multipla and the 1957 Mirafiori Fiat factory tour car. This was the show debut for the factory car since getting its new plexi top.
Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, CA
It was a beautiful day for a show yesterday at the San Marino Car Classic. We brought our Honda 360 (a recent acquisition from France) and the Toyota Sport 800. As reported earlier, we took second in class with the Toyota. The Honda had a lot of admirers.
The show had well over 300 cars entered. There was something for everyone. Lacy Park is a great venue. It’s a very large park with lush landscaping. It has several alcoves around the perimeter that allow several of the different classes to be placed. When wandering through the grounds, it’s almost like several smaller shows taking place at the same time. In addition to the regular entrants, Adam Carolla brought out his collection of former Paul Newman race cars.

We brought several cars out to the Rev Auto Concours last Sunday. Good food, great weather, and great cars! For more photos from the show, check out https://www.flickr.com/…/143420356…/albums/72157697051669984
One of the best CosmoSports on the planet is on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum in the “The Roots of Monozukuri” display. The car is on loan from the Malamut Auto Museum collection. It was restored by our friend Glenn Roberts. Check out the feature at RotaryNews.com. Photos by Rotary News.
We recently brought the 911 RS Porsche hotrod up to the Ramshorn Rally. The 2018 Ramshorn Rally route is an accumulation of several motorcycle routes that were scouted and run in the last couple of years. This year we explored western Colorado with the opening night in Gateway Canyons Resort. Our route took us as far south as Santa Fe, New Mexico. We drove the famous San Juan Hwy that crosses Coal Bank Pass, Molas Divide and Red Mountain Pass. The twisty road along the rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River is an amazing road. We went from red rocks and desert to 11,000′ passes above timberline.
We recently took an endurance one day road trip to Jamul, CA to pick up some new acquisitions for the museum: a 1967 Toyota Sport 800, two vintage Honda motorcycles, and some memorabilia. The traffic on the way was a little rough. Jamul is south east of San Diego. Pulling a trailer also limits the options for saving time. We left the museum at 11:30am and didn’t return to the museum until almost 2am! We think the purchase was well worth the drive. The car and the bikes are all in beautiful condition. Check out the video of the Toyota leaving its former home.
We’ve loaned several pre-1970 Japanese cars to the Petersen Museum for an upcoming the exhibit: Monozukuri. It’s an exhibit on vintage Japanese cars. The show opens late May. To learn more about the exhibit, please visit this link to the Petersen Museum.
We brought the Porsche 911SC RS Tribute car out this past weekend to Luftgekühlt 5, a show for air-cooled Porsches.
The Luftgekühlt brand is the brainchild of two-time Le Mans winner Patrick Long and noted Southern California creative director Howie Idelson. A true Porsche happening, Luftgekühlt is an experiential car culture event centered around a tightly curated list of historically significant or interesting cars.
History buffs will be aware that the initial series of aluminum-bodied 356 models were constructed at an old sawmill in Gmünd, Austria. As a tribute to that, the show took place in a lumber yard in Torrance, CA.
We brought the Mazda Cosmo and the Mazda 360 out for this past weekend’s La Jolla Concours event. Former owner of the cars and all around great guy, Glen Roberts, was also at the show. Glen restored the cars. While at the show, he made some adjustments to the Cosmo and also talked the cars up with the judges. The Cosmo ended up taking first in class. You can’t have two “first places” in the same class. The 360 took second place. It must have been difficult for the judges to make a decision because they are both perfect cars.
The Discovery Channel was at the museum doing a shoot for a new show that they have coming out soon. We can’t announce the show name as of yet because Discovery hasn’t announced it publicly. It sounds like it will be an interesting program. We will announce when the show will be aired soon!
Last month we shipped the green ’64 Porsche (the same car that was in Japan for a rally) to Israel for the Holy Land 1000 Tour.
Approximately 60 vintage cars participated in this unique road event. Driving 1000 miles through the land of Israel in six days allowed participants to experience the remarkably diverse culture, climate and topography of Israel.
The tour departed the Mediterranean coastal city of Tel Aviv, through the beautiful terrain of the Negev desert, the snow caps of the Golan Heights, then dropping to the lowest point of earth – the Dead Sea. We then visited the Red Sea town of Eilat, drove along the Sea of Galilee and visited the must-see cities of Jerusalem and Nazareth. Our voyage took us through mainly rural areas where the driving and roads were top notch.
We recently took part in a Porsche rally in the Palm Springs area. We took the recently acquired Porsche RS tribute car. This car is currently one of the favorites in the collection.
We recently picked up an award at the Vintage VW Treffen car show for Best in Class with our 1951 Porsche.
We recently picked up an award at the Vintage VW Treffen car show for the oldest car in the show with our 1945 VW Beetle. There aren’t too many around much older than that!
We brought our Mazdas out to the SevenStock Mazda show this past weekend at Fontana Speedway. In addition to all the great cars on display, Mazda brought several race cars out of their collection and drove them on the racetrack at speed.
We recently took part in the The Peninsula Tokyo Rally Nippon 2017 with the 1964 Porsche 356 C that we shipped to Japan. The event brought classic-car enthusiasts from around the world together. The 4 day journey took us through some spectacular scenery across the highways and hillside passes of Honshu Island from Kyoto to Tokyo. The rally spanned a total of 1,000 kilometers, or 620 miles. 80 pairs of drivers and passengers of beautifully restored vintage cars took part in the event.
The collection at the museum is constantly evolving. We do from time to time sell cars to make room for new acquisitions. The Renault Caravelle is off to a new home. Well, it’s going back home actually as the person who sold us the car bought it back.
The 1964 Porsche 356 C was recently undergoing some last minute preparation before shipping off to Japan. We’ll be participating in a rally with the car this month.
While visiting the museum with the Tour Americal, Citroën guru Frank Elsermans from Belgium gave our Charleston 2CV a little love. While the party was taking place, Frank installed a new top on the car that he brought with him and also replaced a leaking fuel line. He even donated a spare fuel pump! Frank knows 2CVs. He has 300+ 2CVs back in Belgium!
This past weekend’s 2 day open house will go down as one of the best. We had a large group from Belgium that was on a tour half way across the US and made the museum one of their final stops on their long journey. They shipped over 80 cars from Belgium.
In addition to the group from Belgium, we also welcomed members from PCA, the Corvair Club, several members from Bringatrailer, The Checkered Flag 200, AACA Socal, Central Coast British Car Club, the Petersen Museum
and several others.
Visitors were treated to breakfast and dessert crepes made to order and a different band playing each morning. Mike even stepped in with his guitar on both days and joined the band for a couple of tunes.
The event was well-attended. The surrounding streets and parking lots had a lot of great cars as well.
We brought our recently refreshed Fiat Dino to The Quail in Monterey. The car was originally red but we chose to paint it in a period correct Fiat blue color. The car took first in class!
While in Monterey for Car Week earlier this month, we won this beautiful 1951 Porsche 356 Coupe at auction. The car was built by Lewis Hauser and Pete Archibald of Karosserie Ltd. We’re excited to have this car as part of the collection.
We’re excited to be adding this collection of very rare Volkswagens and a Zundapp motorcycle with sidecar to the museum collection. Special thanks to John Salona for his help in finding and acquiring this rare historic collection!
Mike and the low mile 240z were again recently featured on the bringatrailer website. This time it was for coverage on the Touge California Rally – a rally event for classic Japanese cars. Check out the story here along with some great photos from the event.
We are excited to announce that we have teamed up with BaT Auctions to drive our 31K-mile 1970 Datsun 240Z in the Touge California today. We recently won the car on a bringatrailer.com auction. Touge California is the premier vintage rally for Japanese cars in North America. The third annual running takes place today in Southern California. If you are driving in the Touge, please find our blue Datsun 240Z and say hello to us!
Today we brought a couple of Japanese cars from the collection out to the San Marino Concours. We took home a 3rd in class for the Mazda Cosmo and First place for the Mazda R360.
We brought the Porsche 930 Turbo up to Montana for the Ramshorn Rally. We’ve added a few miles to the car over the 5 day driving event for air-cooled Porsches. Check out this video clip from the event! Click here.
This weekend we brought the 1959 Tempo Matador on its first outing (under our ownership) to the Pismo Vintage Trailer Rally. The Tempo looked great on display along with vintage camping equipment.
Cars and Coffee After Party: We had a really big turnout for yesterday’s open house at the museum. After the local Cars & Coffee event, the Corvair Club, Corvette Club, and several people who were attending the event caravaned over to the museum for a visit. The collection of cars parked along the streets outside the museum was just as fun to check out as the cars inside. The museum provided pizza and snacks to all.
We recently purchased this 1965 Ford Mustang from original owners John and Demetra. The car had been in the family for 52 years. Demerta drove it, her husband drove it and their two sons drove it. It had served the family admirably over those years. Demetra had a remarkable journey with this car. It took her several months to finally purchase a much loved Mustang, but she wanted air and the first group was a 6. When she saw this car In front of Hutchings Ford in Arcadia, CA. she made a quick left turn and the rest is history. The car had air, was a great color and had the distinction of a white stripe. As a young female, all car salesman wanted to sell her a pink or light blue car….She resisted and hit the jackpot with “her car of choice”. Demetra and her husband are getting older now, therefore, thought it is time for the car to find a new home, rather than just going to Ralphs for milk. We will give it a good home. We will keep it original and only plan to tidy things up a bit.
We brought several cars to the Rev Auto Concours this past weekend. The smaller cars were placed in the dining area which made for a nice backdrop while diners dined and a jazz band played on the stage. The Toyota 2000 shared an outdoor patio with a couple of Ferraris. The Fiat Dino was fresh from the paint shop, just in time for the show. The Toyota 800S made it’s show debut as well.
Mike has always found the Toyota S800 a must have for the micro car collection. He dreamed of pairing the 2000 GT & the S800 together in the museum. Look for it to make its debut along side the Toyota 2000 at the Sherwood Country Club Concours February 26th.
We recently loaned our Mini Cooper S to Jay Leno where the car will be featured on a future episode of Jay Leno’s Garage.
We opened our doors Thursday night, February 2, for Car Night. Even under the threat of rain, the event was well-attended.
We picked up the “Car That Stole Our Hearts” award for the 1941 Chrysler Barrelback woody. We also got to meet Mike Brewer from Wheeler Dealers!
This weekend’s Classic Auto Show was a really nice show. We had a prime parking space right in the middle of the venue with our 1941 Chrysler barrelback woody. There was something for everyone’s taste with the variety of cars that were on display. The discussion panels with the guys from the various Velocity Channel programs was great too. It was interesting to learn their stories of how they got to where they are today. If you missed the show, you missed a good one.
We won the 1959 Tempo Matador Mikafa Reisemobil “Landyacht” at the Gooding auction in Scottsdale this weekend. The “Landyacht” has a great and interesting history behind it. We look forward to putting it on display in the museum and taking it to shows.
And we’re off! Driving the 1957 Lincoln Continental MK II on the Arizona Concours Rally, 2017
We brought our 1957 Lincoln Continental MK II out to the Arizona Concours D’Elegance this past Sunday in Old Town Scottsdale. We won Best in Class!
Today we welcomed the Checkered Flag 200 from the Petersen Auto Museum and the Ventura County Corvette Club. Good people, good food, and great cars – the perfect way to spend a Sunday!
November 18 – November 20
We recently took a Porsche 356 on the “Palms to Pines” run with the SoCal 356 Club. Saturday included the classic drive to Idyllwild for which the Palms to Pines event is named. We enjoyed the fall foliage on the scenic drive over the mountain roads designed with the 356 in mind – not for the faint of heart!
Members of the Saratoga Museum in New York were in town this weekend. They stopped by the museum for a visit.
We brought 3 cars out to the Art Center Car Classic this past Sunday: the 1956 BMW 502 Cabriolet, the 1963 VW 23-window bus and Eriba Puck trailer, and the 1956 Dannenhauer & Strauss Cabriolet. It was a fun day spent among good friends and some great cars.
The 1956 BMW 502 Cabriolet wins a “Designer’s Choice” award.
